Near Infrared Reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy has been used in agriculture since the 1960s. The NIR4 device is a small, portable, handheld device that gives a real-time analysis of various nutritional parameters in animal feed and forage.

NIR4 analysis provides information enabling you to optimise ration, improve feed efficiency and improve production output. It can be used at all stages of production, avoiding the expense and time-consuming process of testing samples in a traditional laboratory.

Calibrations Description
Feed Ingredients The NIR4 device can be set to analyse the following feed types: Wheatfeed, Wheat, Confectionary Meal, Full Fat Soya, Barley, Maize/Corn, Soya Hulls, Whole Rapeseed, Palm Kernel Exp, Distillers Grain (high protein), Soyabean Meal Ext, Rapemeal/Canola, Corn Gluten Feed 20%, Distiller Grain (low protein), Sunflower Ext.
Forage Types The NIR4 device can be used to analyse the following types of forage: Fresh Grass NZ, Grass Silage (big bale) NZ, Grass Silage (clamp) NZ, Maize Silage NZ, Wholecrop Silage.
Nutritional Parameters The following nutritional parameters can be measured: Moisture, Oil B, Crude Protein, Fibre, Ash, Starch, Sugar, NDF, NCGD and ME, in forage only.

*Calibrations for forage are designed specifically for Australia and New Zealand.

How It Works

Near Infrared is a form of electromagnetic radiation found on the EM-spectrum, just after visible red wavelengths. Near Infrared Reflectance (NIR) Spectrometry is the study of the interaction between a sample and infrared light that has been dispersed into individual wavelengths.

This process can be used to provide important information regarding the nutritional value of animal feed, feed ingredients and forages. The analysis of this information assists in all stages of production by improving the understanding of the nutrient content of the feed, allowing better decision making when formulating animal diets.

Since the 1960s, advances in technology have led from large benchtop systems to the current NIR4; a small, handheld device.
