Two thirds of the body is water. The body fluids carry oxygen and carbon dioxide, move nutrients to the tissues, remove waste and distribute enzymes and hormones to their target tissues. To function efficiently, body cells require electrical energy and must have a constant, balanced environment which is provided by the fluids surrounding them. Water is a poor conductor of electricity, however electrolytes carry an electrical charge and ionise when added to water making them a powerful conductor of electricity.

Increases in deep body temperature from hot and humid environments can result in electrolyte imbalance, affecting appetite and increasing metabolic rate. The body responds to restore electrolyte balance (homeostasis) directs energy away from productivity toward heat loss. Selectolyte contains Bicarbonate (HCO3-), Sodium (Na) and Potassium (K) ions to restore dietary electrolyte balance (DEB).

Bicarbonate (HCO3-) acts as a buffer to assist in the maintenance of acid-base balance. Sodium (Na) makes up 2% of total body weight and occurs in the fluids around cells where it assists in the maintenance of osmotic pressure. Sodium (Na) is involved in multiple enzyme pathways, including the activation of enzymes responsible for the absorption of glucose and other nutrients from the gut and kidney. Potassium (K) is found inside the cells and is also involved with enzyme systems and is essential for the flow of electrical impulses along the nervous system. 

Selectolyte assists to restore dietary and electrolyte balance (DEB) in animals’ suffering from an elevated body temperature, due to environmental conditions, disease or other stress factors. Optimal DEB is important to ensure the maintenance of deep body temperature and efficient metabolic function.

Selectolyte is an easily applied water-soluble powder for use in drinking water, feed or as a drench. Selectolyte is suitable for all types of livestock, including poultry, pigs, dairy cattle and calves. 

Selectolyte is an efficient product for replacing important dietary electrolytes lost in animals due to environmental stress factors that cause dehydration. Selectolyte is shown to be an effective solution for reducing stock losses in animals under these harsh or stressful conditions.

The product restores the dietary electrolyte balance (DEB) in animals suffering dehydration due to temperature extremes, disease, and other animal husbandry conditions. Maintenance of optimal DEB is important for animal growth and production performance. Selectolyte does not contain any additional chloride.

Easily applied and fully water-soluble, Selectolyte may be used in drinking water, in feed, or as a drench. It is suitable for all types of livestock including calf, dairy cattle, pigs, and poultry. Selectolyte does not cause sedimentation and therefore will not settle at the bottom of medication tanks or clog nipple drinkers.

How Selectolyte Works

Selectolyte is recommended for the restoration and maintenance of the dietary electrolyte balance (or “DEB”). The DEB is typically expressed as milliequivalents (mEq) of Sodium (Na) plus Potassium (K) minus Chloride (Cl). 

In conditions of high temperature and humidity, the DEB requirement often cannot be achieved through consumption of feed. In these conditions, animals have difficulty maintaining deep body temperatures and will be less productive.

Selectolyte is a free-flowing, water-soluble alkaline electrolyte powder containing high levels of the key dietary electrolytes, Sodium (Na), Potassium (K) and Bicarbonate (HSO3). Selectolyte assists to restore the DEB and acid-base balance to restore normal physiological function.

Note: Selectolyte does not contain added Sodium Chloride (NaCl) or Potassium Chloride (KCl).
